Port to Airtel without Stepping Out
Technology has transformed the telecom experience of Indians completely in the past few years. Apart from technology another factor that has helped give shape to the experience of modern telecom customers, is the change in policies and rules of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India also called TRAI.
The changes that have been introduced by TRAI have streamlined many of the internal workings of the telecom service providers, and have made many things easier for telecom consumers. Most of the leaders of the telecom industry have welcomed the changes brought by TRAI since it ultimately results in a better customer experience. One of the areas that have seen a major change in the past few years has been Mobile Number Portability or MNP.

Commonly known by the abbreviation MNP or the word porting,it is a process where you can retain your number while moving from one network operator to another. As wonderful as the process is, there are some conditions that you need to successfully meet to go forward with the actual Porting process. Here are some of the criteria you need to keep in mind when applying for MNP to ensure that your request goes through without any hassles.
- The number must be more than 90 days old on the current network
- For postpaid mobile connection numbers, all dues such as outstanding bills and contact amounts have to be paid in full to the current network operator, before putting in the MNP request to TRAI
- No existing request for change of mobile ownership should be underway when placing the request for MNP
- An order by the court of law should not prohibit the porting of the mobile number in question
- All exit clauses of the current network provider must have been fulfilled when placing the MNP request
If you successfully meet the above criteria, you are free to place the request to TRAI for your MNP and providing your Unique Porting Code or UPC. To generate and provide your UPC you need to send an SMS with the text “PORT<space>Your 10 digit Mobile Number>” to 1900. Following this, your UPC will be generated and sent to your mobile number.
Once a UPC has been generated it is only valid for 4 days. The exception, in this case, is in the case of Jammu & Kashmir, as well as the North-East Indian states where the porting code will remain valid for 15 days.
To make the most out of the UPC window, you need to contact the new telecom provider beforehand. For example, if you are porting to Airtel from a different network, you can visit the Airtel website beforehand av visit the “Port to Airtel” dropdown under the Prepaid or Postpaid tabs.
